Beth Ann Rogers Literacy Initiative

Beth Ann RogersThe ATPE Foundation’s literacy initiative grant is named in memory of Beth Ann Rogers, who served Texas educators in a variety of roles, including that of ATPE state president during the 1993-94 school year. Throughout Beth Ann’s 36-year career, she taught kindergarten, special education and P.E. and also served as a principal and librarian. Beth Ann worked in Jacksonville, Hallsville, Austin and Eanes ISDs, and she held a master’s degree in library science from LeTourneau University.

Through the Beth Ann Rogers Literacy Initiative, the ATPE Foundation provides $1,000 grants to Texas public school libraries to purchase literacy materials and modernize literacy resources. Five grants will be awarded during the 2008-09 school year. Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 20, 2009.

Criteria and Guidelines

  1.  Applicants must apply on behalf of a public school library in the state of Texas.
  2. All applications must be submitted using the official application.
  3. Only one application per school is allowed per year.
  4. The Foundation gives preference to schools in which at least 50% of the students are eligible to receive free or reduced price lunches.
  5. Funds must be used to purchase literacy materials for use in the school’s library. Literacy materials include, but are not limited to books, audio books, computer software, magazine/serial publication subscriptions, online databases, etc.
  6. Recipients will be required to complete a follow-up form within one year of receiving funds.

ATPE Foundation awards
grant to Harris Elementary

The ATPE Foundation awarded its first grant, the Beth Ann Rogers Literacy Initiative grant to Austin ISD’s Harris Elementary School May 1, 2008. Grants awarded through the literacy initiative will help school libraries purchase literacy materials and modernize resources for students. The ATPE Foundation looks forward to awarding five additional grants during the 2008-09 school year.
